Spleodar Pullover: Now in Sport, DK, and Aran Weight

Spleodar Pullover - 3 Versions

Well, that escalated quickly…

Too cold for a party frock?
Knit up a cozy party yoke!

Thus begins the cover page of the Spleodar Pullover. Originally published in 2019, this pattern began as a festive colourwork yoke pattern, quick to knit in Aran-weight yarn.

But this year its simple existence was disrupted. At the end of last summer, I was planning a collection of colourwork samples with Studio Donegal, using their fingering-weight Darnie yarn. We thought the Spleaodar motif might look well, and so I gave it a try - in the process writing up a new set of instructions to suit the finer gauge.

Spleodar Pullover - Sportweight

To achieve this, I recalculated the stitch counts and expanded the colourwork chart. The finer gauge also allowed me to add children’s sizes, which was something people had been asking for.All in all I liked the result very much, and prepared to publish the update in Autumn.

But then, the more I looked at photos of the original Aran-weight sample (I no longer have the original), the more I felt sorry for it. In the process of writing up the new sportweight version, I had tweaked the proportions a bit to improve them. It seemed unfair to not do the same to the original Aran-weight version.

Spleodar Pullover - Aran Weight

…And so I reworked that one as well, to match the proportions and style of the new sportweight one. I loved the result in airy Höner och Eir Nutiden. All good, and I updated the pattern with the new Aran-weight version as well.

I was then scheduling a photoshoot with Anna to photograph both samples, when she reminded me that I had gifted her another one of these 3 years ago. This was an experimental version, where I modified the gauge a bit to suit the Swiss Rara Lana Wool I had managed to get my hands on back in the day. I did not remember what gauge I had knitted it in, so I measured it after Anna brought hers to show me. It turned out to be a DK weight gauge, smack in the middle of the two versions of the pattern I had on offer.

Spleodar Pullover - DK Weight

And so… You guessed it. I wrote up a DK version as well.

The result: You can now knit the Spleodar Pullover in practically any yarn ranging from fingering weight to Aran weight. There are three pattern files, with separate sets of instructions.

The DK and Aran weight patterns each feature a range of 8 adult sizes. The fingering-sportweight pattern additionally features toddler and children’s sizes.

The pattern is worked top-down, and follows tradtitional circular yoke construction.

To celebrate the triptych pattern update, the Spleodar Pullover is on sale this week.
