LLF Pullover for Toddlers
As those who’ve followed along with my work for some time are aware, I do not design garment patterns for babies, toddlers or children.
That being said, I often knit for my daughter - who is now 3 years old - from my own patterns. When starting with a pattern designed for a DK-Aran weight gauge, doing this requires only a very minor modification: I switch to a sport-weight yarn, and aim for a tighter gauge. I then follow instructions for one of the smaller sizes (depending on the pattern, and on her age/ size at the time), exactly as-written. No changes in stitch counts are needed.
Most recently, my daughter declared that she wanted a jumper that was ‘like Katy’s, only pink’ (Katy being her doll, shown int he photo!) So I used the LLF Pullover pattern, and the sport-weight WildBrier from Spinning Yarns, Weaving Tales.
To save you the need to do math, here is a quick guide to adapting this pattern for a toddler:
Use sport weight yarn (approximately 300m/ 100g)
Aim for a gauge of 24 sts per 10cm
Then select size as follows:
Toddler 2-3 years - follow instructions for size 1
Toddler 3-4 years - follow instructions for size 2
Child 4-5 years - follow instructions for size 3
Or, for a toddler under 2 years:
Use fingering-weight yarn (approximately 400m/ 100g)
Aim for a gauge of 26 sts per 10cm
Follow instructions for size 1
When using this method, you do not need to make any changes to the stitch counts. Simply use the stitch counts for the specified size, and shorten the bodice and sleeve lengths (which are given in cm/inches) as-needed.
Hopefully this is helpful!
